Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation— (ESV) 1 Peter 2:2
Many years ago, I had taken a fasting without drinking water. After a day, I had severe dehydration. Every cell in my body was intensively craving and longing for water. It was an intense thirst for water. It was like a deer panting for the waters. When I had water, I still remember that I drank several glasses of water like a person who was drinking water for the first time. A new born baby would cry when s/he is hungry for milk. Spiritual craving is a mark of our spiritual appetite. Desire for spiritual things shows our spiritual appetite. I had seasons where my appetite was very low. Even if I see some food that I like, I could not eat them. There are many Christians who live in either low spiritual appetite or no spiritual appetite. Many lost their desire for spiritual things - No interest in word of God, prayer, Christian character, fellowship, sharing gospel etc. Many Christians attend church, but their desire and receptivity towards spiritual things are either lost or very low. When spiritual appetite is low, you would not be able receive even spiritual food. One of the reasons for low spiritual appetite is that the worldly desires have taken over our heart. Now our heart longs for worldly pleasures. If you are not having a good spiritual appetite, you will not feed yourself with spiritual things. Consequently, your spiritual growth will be affected– first love is lost, relationship with God become weak and spiritual activities become a burden and ritual etc.
Be aware of your level of spiritual appetite.
If you are in a season of low spiritual appetite, check your heart for the reason. Do you believe any lie of the enemy? Does your heart go after any worldly stuff? Do you have any wrong priority? Do you carry any offense in your heart?
Take some measures to bring back your spiritual appetite: prioritize God first, take time and think about what God has done for you, attend fellowship – iron sharpens iron, read and hear the word of God, pray for a desire for Jesus etc.
